Helping Riders Rebuild Confidence: Equestrian Mental Health & Rider Confidence Services
You Love your Horse…
But somewhere along the way, riding stopped feeling the way it used to.
Maybe your confidence disappeared after a fall.
Maybe you’re riding a new horse and second-guessing every decision.
Maybe your body tenses every time you leave the arena, approach a jump, or head out on the trail.
Or maybe nothing “big” happened at all, but you can’t seem to get your confidence back.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
As both a licensed therapist and lifelong horse owner, I’ve worked with riders who deeply love their horses but quietly struggle with fear, self-doubt, and anxiety in the saddle.
The good news?
Confidence isn’t something you’re born with. It’s something your nervous system can learn
Why Riding Anxiety Happens

Many riders tell themselves things like:
“I should be over this.”
“I’m just overthinking.”
“Other people don’t struggle like this.”
In reality, anxiety isn’t a character flaw.
It’s your nervous system trying to protect you.
When your brain perceives uncertainty or danger, whether after a fall, a scary ride, or even repeated stressful experiences, it naturally shifts into protection mode.
Your breathing changes.
Your muscles tighten.
Your vision narrows.
Your balance changes.
Your horse notices every one of those changes.
Understanding what’s happening inside your body is often the first step toward rebuilding confidence.
Common Challenges I Help Riders With

- Fear after a fall Loss of confidence
- Trail riding anxiety
- Competition nerves
- Riding a new or unpredictable horse
- Fear of cantering or jumping
- Returning to riding after time away
- Overthinking while riding
- Panic symptoms while mounted

- Feeling disconnected from your horse
- Perfectionism and self-criticism
- Learning to trust yourself again
My Approach
I don’t teach people how to ride.
There are many wonderful trainers who do that.
My role is different.
As a licensed therapist, I help riders understand what their nervous system is doing and teach practical skills that complement the riding instruction they’re already receiving.
Together we’ll learn how to:
- Recognize early signs of anxiety
- Regulate your nervous system before anxiety takes over
- Improve body awareness and breathing
- Build a felt sense of safety
- Develop confidence gradually through manageable challenges
- Strengthen the connection between you and your horse

The goal isn’t to eliminate fear.
The goal is to help you respond to fear in a way that allows confidence to grow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to have anxiety to benefit?
Not at all.
Many riders simply want to improve confidence, understand their nervous system, or strengthen their partnership with their horse.
Are you a riding instructor?
No.
I am a licensed therapist and horse owner.
My work focuses on the psychology and neuroscience of confidence, anxiety, and the horse-rider relationship. I work alongside (not in place of) your riding instructor.
Do you offer one-on-one sessions at my barn?
Yes! I offer private Rider Confidence Sessions for individuals who would like personalized support while working with their own horse.
These sessions focus on helping riders understand their nervous system, develop practical confidence-building strategies, and apply those skills in the environment where they ride.
Because these sessions take place outside of a traditional therapy office and involve travel and on-site consultation, they are offered as a private-pay service and are not billed to health insurance.
The investment for a 90-minute Private Rider Confidence Intensive is $225, plus any applicable travel fee (Within 30 miles of Baileys Harbor: Included. Beyond 30 miles: $0.70 per mile) round trip for locations outside my standard service area.
Payment is due at the time of scheduling, as these sessions are reserved exclusively for you.
The fee reflects not only the 90-minute session itself, but also the time spent preparing for your goals, traveling to your location, providing individualized coaching, and creating practical strategies you can continue using long after the session. It also covers Follow-up email with key recommendations and a 30-minute follow-up telehealth 2–3 weeks later to check in and see how things are going.
My goal is for you to leave with tools that support lasting confidence, not just during our time together, but every time you ride.
What Happens in a Rider Confidence Session?
Each session is tailored to you and your goals. Depending on your needs, we may focus on:
- Understanding your nervous system and anxiety responses
- Grounding and breathing techniques
- Building body awareness
- Mounted or unmounted confidence exercises
- Developing a personalized plan for continued progress
- Strengthening communication and trust between you and your horse
The goal isn’t to eliminate fear. It’s to help you develop the skills and confidence to move through it.
Do you travel?
Yes! I travel throughout Wisconsin for private Rider Confidence Sessions and clinics.
Travel availability and any applicable travel fees will be discussed when scheduling your appointment.
Can you help after a riding accident?
Absolutely.
Many riders seek support after a fall or frightening experience to help rebuild confidence before returning to riding.
Can these sessions be billed to my health insurance?
Traditional psychotherapy sessions conducted through telehealth are eligible for insurance coverage when medically appropriate.
However, on-site Rider Confidence Sessions at your barn are educational, consultative services and are not billed to insurance. Payment is due at the time of scheduling.
I’m interested in hosting a clinic at my barn. How does that work?
I’d love to talk with you! I offer From Tension to Trust™, a rider confidence program that can be customized for boarding barns, lesson programs, equestrian organizations, and riding clubs throughout Wisconsin.
Please reach out through my contact form or email to discuss available dates and hosting details.

Ready to Ride with Greater Confidence?
You don’t have to “just push through.”
You don’t have to feel embarrassed about your fear.
And you don’t have to figure it out alone.
Whether you’re looking for therapy, a clinic, or simply want to learn more about rebuilding confidence through nervous system regulation, I’d love to help.

“Just finished up my private lesson from the clinic. I learned a lot and it really opened my eyes to what’s going on. So my horse is essentially an empath and shows what I am feeling. The moment I breath and calm down so does he. I can’t recommend The Joyful Mind, LLC enough. She showed me just how in tune Emir is with me, even with only having him for a few month”

“Carissa was so personable and her presence made me feel like she truly understood that anxiety of being in the saddle after a wreck. I appreciate her knowledge and ability to help me find the joy in riding again.”
